A Story of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured I would book lodging upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Coming from Singapore, I thought perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the night somewhere that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for acing a crucial interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more individuals like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared out of place since a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and wondered if I was OK. I shared my predicament and immediately she offered I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my medical school interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one of the sandwiches she had taken home her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.
Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she undertook as a young woman allowing a man she had only just encountered stay in her room. At that time I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still very grateful.
I never did go to ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish life has returned her act of kindness tenfold. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
