Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
