Chicago White Sox Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative $34 Million Deal.

In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16M for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, surpassing the all-time record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh.
