Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
