The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
