Zohran Mamdani affirms plans to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, did not confirm this decision immediately following his triumph in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
